David Copperfield - Portal - The most amazing illusion ever
David Copperfield teleports himself and a member of the audience to Hawaii from hundreds of miles away in seconds, in front of an audience of over twenty thousand people in a round theater, completely surrounded. This clip is taken from The Magic of David Copperfield XVII: Tornado of Fire, and was performed thousands of times all over the world in his tour “Portal”, which ran from 2000 to 2002. Considered one of the greatest illusions of all time, Portal is a masterpiece of magic …

If you watch the whole tv special, the presentor says where Copperfield will be performer and he describes it as “in a round theatre in front of over 20,000 people.”
In other videos, such as Thirteen you see a lot more of the area, it is full round and goes back along way.

man that aint 22000 people. you ever been to a basketball game? most arenas only hold about 18000. and that audience aint nowhere near that its a small auditorium. cool video though. nice trick however it WAS fake. if that is 22000 people laughing at the same time then he sure was bombing.

What I liked best about this illusion is the feel good factor. Brilliant.

Great video, made a friend of mine cry when the dad and son met
January 10th, 2010 at 10:16 am
you do realise that he isnt actually magic

@RobtheBig
This is incorrect because:
1. This show has been shown live on tour all over the world.
2. There are 22,000 people in this audience alone, and this has been performed thousands of times to millions of people.
3. I have seen this live myself.
4. They never cut the camera from the moment he disappears to when he reappears on the beach.

this isnt that difficult. maybe my explanation isnt that the right one but the whole audience could be staged so they shot the part up to wen he left then came back—- and then they literally traveled to hawii in a plane then filmed that part.

WTF!? that can’t be physically possible! my eyes are deceiving me! He DIDN’T JUST DO THAT!

@oleglysenko
They were selected at random from an audience of over 22,000 people. So no, they are genuinely random spectators.
January 10th, 2010 at 10:16 am
maybe the people from the audience was chosen and maybe they where actors hmmm

Actually David goes to some length to prove that the video is NOT pre-recorded, by having his arm signed a photo taken, which is teleported too.
Also, if it was pre-recorded, then how could Bret (the guy at the beach) talk to them and say “Hi TS” and stuff like that?
Think about it and you soon realise it was not pre-recorded.

I’ve sat and watched this many times trying to work out how he does it and I can say this, most of his tricks if you think about it logically you can work out, but not this one. The vid in the background is filmed before hand that is the easy bit but how he disappears on the platform is beyond me. Usually its enough space to fit the people involved but not this time, an illusion genius beyond measure!

Does David have any brothers and sisters?
Now, how cool would it be to have him as your uncle as you grow up? lol It would be like:
Hey, uncle David is going to do a magic trick!
and bang!!!
He replaces your dad’s car with the Eiffel Tower, while your annoying sister is set flying in circles around the towe, right there and then, on a sunday barbecue! lol

January 10th, 2010 at 10:16 am
How exactly is this easy to figure out -.-
January 10th, 2010 at 10:16 am
If you ask me, this is the easiest ever to figure out.
January 10th, 2010 at 10:16 am
Love to see this one live.
January 10th, 2010 at 10:16 am
This made me cry…
Everyone should see this; I don’t want to know how its done - its too amazing for the knowledge to ruin it.

A beautiful illusion, one of the greatest of all time; if not THE greatest.
So magnificent.
