I'm a beginning magician that's considering doing street magic at some point. I'd like to know how to go about doing this (ex. Do I need to get a permit, do I place a hat or other container out where people can put money in, will I need to fill out any business forms, etc.) and what advice you may have for me in regards to this. Thanks! :)

lol no dont put a hat out and collect money !!!!

just walk around and look for someone to do a trick to, try to look for people that arn't going to try to ruin your tricks, girls are the best. If you can get somebody to follow you with a camera to get some videos of your tricks. Also when you have a camera sometimes people come to you.

Well, as much as I would enjoy entertaining people with my magic, I do need to get paid for what I do. It's true that I plan on doing other kinds of shows as well, but I'm counting on street magic as one possible source for income too.

Liam-k, thanks for the information.

Just to clarify things, I'm not getting into street magic, thinking that I'm necessarily going to get rich from it, but that I may get some amount of money from it. I would probably have something nearby for people to put money into, if they want to; a dollar here and there...some loose change...it does add up. Anyways, it really won't be a waste of time one way or the other, as I can use that opportunity to get use to performing for the public and can pass out business cards as well.

Do not put out a hat for people to give u money.. thats begging and it's pretty lame for a magician. Just go to them and ask them : "Hey! Can you help me out here?" or, "Hello! wanna see some magic?" or "Excuse me, but have you ever seen this before?"

Thats what I say when I do streetmagic but i havent done that in ages, gonna make a street magic video near summer:)

I agree with not passing a hat out for people to put money into; that can put them on the spot...that's why I would have something nearby (sitting on a table) for them to put money into, if they want to.

I have gotten 2-5 dollar tips for my better street performances (I usually go to one of the starbucks by my house [there are 4 of them, all 2 blocks away lol])
so I think try to create a good solid performance and go at it, if you don't get a any tips, then just wear a card board box on your head and go cry alone in a corner in a small hole in Alabama, lol, jk, I really do recommend wearing a large piece of cardboard that says "Will do magic for spare change", jk again.

edit: Look a turtle

edit:edit: No I am not drunk. I am having a moment.

May I ask how old you are and where you live? Because in certain states, you need a license to do that. Busking can be a dangerous thing....
