Hey guys,
I thought I would come o here to ask you guys a very simple question and here it is...
What is your opinion about the art of magic in todays world?
Is it going good? Is it going down hill? Is it going through a little "slump"?
Whats your opinion?

I feel its going downhill due to places like this where people freely share secrets

Yeah downhill, by the time im 40, there will be no more card sleights, they will run out of ideas

Not ideas, but the magic community, morals and ethics is what I mean.

i agree. the best example so far is beleive, who wants to pay to know how to do a trick that every magician knows how to do anyway. all it is is a double lift and u tear the corner off both cards. its a standard and basic sleight, and then the corner tear is even a basic sleight ttoo as its taught in many basic card magic books to show u how to get duplicate corner tears for doin transposition effects or even card thru window effects, just a total waste of money
and then theres witness, ur payin lee asher 2-3 times as much as his book that it was released in several years earlier to leanr the exact same damn trick only on video
magicians now adays are only out to make money, repackagin old effects is one way of sayin they are running out of ideas

I agree with traum, but not entirely when you say that magicians now only cares about money. I think it's more magic shop and online shops (no need to give examples...) that only cares about making money with magic now...
traumatised-magic
07-27-2008, 01:37 PM
thats true, but most of the online shops are run by magicians they obviously sell there tricks at a certain price wich means online shops need to sell at a certain price to make money from it as well

Exactly, so if you don't like the product or don't agree with it, then don't buy it, why would you have to pirate it?

my statement had nothin to do with me not likin it or agreein with it, all i was mearly sayin was magicians are clearly out to make money cause they are running out of ideas so have bring back all the old ones in new fancy packagin and for ur information i didnt pirate or buy either of the tricks i mention as they are easy to figure out cause they are nothin new or spectacular...i'm sure even noobs were disapointed with beleive after buyin and realising the exact same trick is in a beginers magic book they could have rented form the library lol
the reason DerrenBrown is so angry and insultin people is cause i've banned him at least once already as DavidBlaine he just made a differnet account to come back and insult everyone, well it just means this account gets banned too for not respecting members and insulting them

It's quite simple really, with the invention of the internet, too many noobs can get on youtube, putfile, mininova, ect. and learn a few tricks and think they're the next Cris Angel. It's sad and it's an f'ing disgrace. And what's worse is that when they "practice" said tricks they HAVE to put their horrible videos on youtube and make fools of themselves. Now I don't blame the ones who actually try. It's the ones who don't take the art serioulsy who I want to slap in the face.
With that said, I think the art of magic is at a steady decline. Unless something happens soon that is.

Magic rules.. New magicians that just want the easy way to learn tricks arent real magicians. They're "fake" ones.. They learn the effect. performs it badly and gets an applause.. Real magicians that practices loads before performing gets a WOW!! then a big applause with lots of questions and an audience that are astonished.. Magic to day isnt what it was before. When people hear that a guy is a magician they think he pulls a rabbit out of a hat.. Most of the new comers today are card magicians mostly and if not, they do other things. but not the classic magic we're used to see...

NONE of them can do things properly.. so basically, this site is bad for magicians that are taking magic serious.. But good for people to get to know tricks then practice them. not saying this site sucks balls.. Downhill!
One of the reasons is sites like ELLUSIONIST! when flow or Ultra gaff or gaff or any other new trick was released you just had to type in to Google "Magic","Movie Magic Pro" and the place would be full of New magic at Ellusionist,We have new magic!, Special time offer.
I think magic shops should be hidden for regular people who don't do magic.Like Davenports magic shop in London It was in some underground place.

I agree about all of this... however, aren't the people who sell magic at fault... ANY ONE CAN DO MAGIC! Ellusionist, brad christian, with 25 years of magic under his belt, is revealing magic to every one around the world... "to make his dream of teaching magic a reality..." as the ellusionist site states on their front page... WHAT A JOKE!!! people, unfortunately, we live in a selfish world where astonishment is worth less than money, when someone creates a trick, they sell it, to people like Ellusionist. I must say STOP COMPLAINING! it is our fault. if magic had gone the way it should have, apprenticeship should have been key, meaning that not every one could learn unless they studied under a pro, thus making it stupid to tell your tricks... unless you sold them!!! so now we se that their is no pride in magic only selfishness... if you want to be good, create your own amazing illusions, then dont sell them.
lol... "no one would do that"
Exactly.

in fact until just a few years ago thats the way it was...magicians guarded there pet secrets for years before revealing them....
for nearly 20 years magicians around the world wondered how Tom Mullica ate all those cigarettes....and he was the only magician that performed it....then he quit smoking and did away with the cigarettes...and then made videos teaching his techniques. now you see lots of people performing it.
these days the minute someone creates something the first thing they want to do is sell it....hear me now....there is another way to make money with magic....its called performing!

thanks magick for your insightful words... the trick ive created I planned on selling... its just a side trick, but im no magician, i just do this for fun, to impress the guys in band im a softmore i mean come on, quick cash what should i do... should i pm it to someone who does or should i try to sell it... im no performer.
it is in general magic right now pm me if your interested. lol

Thats actually an idea i like. However is it the Brick and mortar magic shop's fault or is the blame solely the internet? Personally I know when i go into my local magic shop its a great feeling to interact with other magicians and see live product demo's whereas on the internet your pretty much on your own.

That's the irony of the magic shop. It's a business so they have to sell more. But at the same time, since they're selling secrets, they also have to limit selling. Most magic shops I know of display only a certain set of tricks. Every once in a while, you see something new, but if you're not in the know, you won't appreciate it. I have to explicitly ask for what I needed before they went and got it from storage. Eventually, they got to know me and don't hold anything back anymore.
Another shop I know of from out of town wanted me to buy scotch and soda; and other similar tricks when I asked around. However, they gladly sold me Down's Art of Magic. It was my first 'real' magic book.
I guess that's how it can be balanced. It's not always fair to the new people, but it's a trade of secrets, so we can only do so much.

i totally agree. its clear to see all these young "magicians" (i use that in the broadest term possible) have no interest in performing these tricks they make up at least not for money anyways cause all they want to do is sell them to make a quick buck.......but then what happens when they find they are standin on stage performing their tricks to a crowd full of people that bought those tricks at a shop...it makes the show lame and borein and the audience feels cheated out of their money and thus u loose business. the reason copperfield, burton and penn & teller keep bringin in audiences with the same show night after night is because they keep there biggest secrets a secret. if they were to reveal everythin they wouldnt have a show cause everyone will know how its done and wont b amazed so wont see a point in goin to the watch the show
my point bein everythin now a days is governed by money. everyone is out to make money as fast and as much of it as they can

traumatised-magic
07-28-2008, 04:48 AM
well i personally dont really mind either way. yes magicians should b credited for their work, i just dont justify spending $25 or how ever much it is on a dvd teachin me to do a double lift and tear the corner off
exposure is good, it helps us grow as magicians. it gives younger magicains soemthin to learn and it gives a purpose for older ones to come up with somethin new
i feel as long as its kept with in the magic comunity exposure to a certian degree is a part of the learning curve
its just when i see stuff like teh masked magician exposin tricks on tv to everyone thats when it starts to ruin magic

LMT= All magic you can imagine.. if you cant find it, request it and you'll get it
E= Over priced, but the tricks are quite good. not all but some are..
T11= Worst crap site ever made.. who the fuck is dumb enough to not figure out BLUEPRINT!? o.O
PM= They got everything.. Lots of magic supplies and tricks for all sorts of magicians. But all of the tricks are revealed on LMT., But it is a good place to get magic supplies like blank deck, expensive gimmicks, IT, double backer deck, double facer deck and other gimmicks that are just best to buy

I have to agree, I find it really ironic people say ellusionist is a ripoff, but praise T11, T11 has a nice forum(and pretty good cards but so far everything there has been crap(dangerous even was crap) they are a way bigger ripoff then E, with E you will actually use there products(and their cards blow T11's out of the water)
Its really ironic, people complain we need more interest in magic, yet at the same token whenever a noob wants feedback, or something is posted on youtube we blow up. idk about you but interest in magic has gone up since youtube and tv, magic isnt dying, its growing and everyone is to stupid to realize it.
While you guys may not like Brian Tudor, he hit the nail on the head with this statement. "Magicians are some of the biggest hypocrites there are."

i agree i think that magic is goin downhill as most of todays modern magicians are out morely to make money than to give a quality contribution to our art really things like 30 dollars for a double lift tearing both cards and sliding a corner is way too god damn much and they too are bringing back old effects again and again and not to mention most of todays younger magicians like us dont even care to perform something of quality for example all the you noobs out there performing and really all of it is just hurting magic

Magic isnt going downhill guys..
Cant yuou see it? New sites popping up from nowhere selling tricks. T11 is a quite new one.. And we got this illcenter now which got some tricks that are good.. And besides that, if you are a member of a magic club, you would have changed your mind.. They go to different places to meet other people. They perform, share and developing new tricks. Getting help with their magic and so on..
Magic is DEFFINATELY not going downhill. It's actually going uphill if thats a word..LOL!!!
