Look closely, his right thumb. When his right hand passes under the left, he hits it with his thumb, for the card one, he simply left the cadr slightly outjogged in the back or crimped it.

I'm with Altai here. Notice that the movement always coincides with the right thumb covered by the left hand in all cases.

Besides, magnets attract metal, not repel. You need another magnet on the object to force a repel.

Also, impromptu doesn't necessarily mean gimmick-less outside the context of cards.
