So over the summer I really got into card magic, practiced for hours every day until school came. I've been doing stuff to everybody and they are all amazed. Except for the few kids with a big ego that try to act like they think its the stupidest thing ever.
But lately people have started to look up basic stuff on the internet until they come back the next day...
"Hey! I know how you do all your card tricks! You go to Ellusionist.com dont you!"
(somehow all the kids who act like they dont care google 'learn card tricks'...)
The honest answer is 'no' but nobody beleives me obviously.
People are trying to get their parents to buy them hundreds of dollars dvds. No doubt the few who get their parents to do it will try to learn everything at once, get frustrated after 10 minutes, and end up just telling everyone else how to do it instead.
This happen to anybody?

i try to avoid youtube stuff. the only thing i learned from youtube is muscle pass (and im pretty good at it). also no one has ever heard of "e" or T11 or even penguin that i show magic to. even if they do, who seriously buys the DVDs anyways. Just dont worry about them an show to people that enjoy your magic. good luck.

It almost happened to me once when I was floating a bill. The thing was, he got the regular ITR version while I used Loops.
"What do you mean I have a thread stuck behind my ear?" :p
Just what tricks did you show them? I find that only the most basic tricks can be found when you search google with a generic query like that. Even if they happen to find the LMT front page, they'll have to sort through a LOT of material to find what you did. Only the most obnoxious lay people have the patience to sift through that.
If you do happen to be using basic tricks (since you did say you just got into magic this summer), then dont' worry. Eventually you'll get better and better. As your skill and knowledge goes, it'll become practically impossible to figure your tricks out by google alone. The only caveat is if they know the name, which they really shouldn't anyway. Dr. Daley's Last Trick is a hopeless case if you don't know the name. For something more common like the Ambitious Card, as your skill grows, you'll learn many ways of doing it so that you can always shift to a different method if they find one. Learning them all requires a dedication that even some magicians don't have!
Worse comes to worse, if they happen to know the basic sleights you can do, throw a crimp their way and it's all over for them :D That's why I keep Clutch as a backup trick, but that's just me.
Don't worry too much about it. They can't possibly keep up with magic as lay people. Even if they go buy the DVDs, it's not that a big issue. First of all, try avoiding popular tricks. Secondly, without serious study, they won't grasp it along with the full intricacies. All you have to do is perform and perform well. I've heard of someone having to perform for a spectator who knows that a thumb tip was. Nonetheless, the magician did a thumb tip trick. The spec was still astounded, and wasn't able to determine that a thumb tip was in play.
Good luck!

Yeah, but honestly there is a lot of basic moves that you cant avoid doing every once in a while. (double lift, riffle force etc.)
And recently one of my closer friends who has been snooping around e found the invisible deck under the trick decks section. Ive been using it cus it gets great reactions. Luckily he isnt the type to run around telling people about it.

one of the other mistakes young magicians make is they tell the spectator the name of the trick.....
don't use the name of the effect in the patter!!!!!
two reasons
1: your giving them something to search for...
2: if you give it a name....then its no longer magic, it's just a trick.

The only thing that can be worse...Is spending THOUSANDS of $$ on stage items/props...and have The Masked Magician reveal them.

Well we cant really exclude them from wanting to know magic, isn't that how we got interested? By a friend? or the internet? And yes you shouldn't say the name of the trick.

If you're performing for a high-paying gig on camera, will you really be so unprepared as to be unable to manage the audience and unable to demand respect? :)

When I was young, I never learned magic just to know how a trick is done and blab it to everyone. There's a difference.
