Yea, I would think of doing something like this.
I think fancy gimmicks and stuff kinda impress them more and are much more easy to understand.
Um, maybe some silk vanishes and stuff.

I wouldn't recommend doing a card trick because that stuff is kinda hard for them to understand, like don't get them to remember stuff. I remember I performed one of my CardToon decks in front of a 4 year old (I was performing for a family and the 4 year old was there) he didn't seem very impressed.
Sponge balls maybe?
And if it is a little dark D'Lites, many people say D'Lites are bad and unrealistic, but I enjoy them.

But now that I think about it, I think I have gone kinda off topic.....I think there is a difference between 8 year olds and 4 year olds. But some of this stuff should work.

Do most 8 year olds know what a deck of cards is? I think a lot would probably know a little about it.

Sometimes I do perform for Kids, and what I learned is that:
-Kids LOVE DīLites
-Kids LOVE Sponge Balls !
-Kids LOVE stuff that produces sweets ( sweets out of Hat instead of rabbit )
-Kids are also impressed by floating stuff ( spider pen )
-kids absolute get HAPPY if you produce some wands and give to them as a present ( wand(s) out of wallet ), or. I have a magic dealer that sells those "roll-up-wands" made of foil: they are very small and when the plastic ring is released they grow with a flick to full size... take off the ring from 3-5 of them, put them in a foil ant tie the ends like a big candy... then put the siedes apart and the wands pop out, flying everywhere and the kids almost FIGHT to get one ;)
-kids love stuff with animals: make a small animal appear ( mouse, rat, hamster )
-Kids like it easy and easy to follow... make it funny and easy o follow
-Insta Snow and kids: good reactions ( or: use 3 plastic cups, put some slush powder in one of them, pour visibly water in and make the old "can the eye follow my hands" game REALLY SLOW...then lift the selected cup over your head and do as if you would pour the water over your head... and itīs vanished -or stab a pen thru the cup and wow...nothing pours out...kids love it)
-kids love ropes... you can have one come on stage and perform a trick with you with ropes ( 3 different lengths get 3 same lengths stuff)
-Kids love color changing silks ( silks and thumb tips work good wih kids )

Do NO Card Tricks and NO Money tricks, thats NOT what Kids want to see... they love the classic magician that disappears water from a newspaper, has the rabbit in his hat and all that stuff that is monotype prejudice to a magician ;)
