I've tested this, numerous times, even the way it's not supposed to be done, and it's worked flawlessly.
This is my own effect.
The spectator takes the deck at the beginning of the trick, the magician never touches it again throughout the entire trick. The spectator thinks of any card, pulls it out [without showing the magician] to verify its existence and then proceeds to cut, shuffle, etc. to lose the card in the deck. The magician instructs the spectator to place his/her hand on top of the deck, and start to imagine squeezing the card out of existence, squeezing the deck, imagining the card disintegrating into nothing.
The spectator is then free to look through the deck, to find that their card has vanished, the magician never touching the deck.
