View Full Version : Routines that work
Hey guys, I just joined SYM, a magic club at my place, and I want a good routine.
Which of your routines get the BIGGEST, MOST MASSIVE REACTIONS FROM SPECTATORS? I don't want to practice a routine that doesn't live up to the reactions. Thanks!
Also, I would like your opinion on your best card trick and how good it is. THX AGAIN!

That is almost impossible to say, it really all depends on your performance style and what you are going to be comfortable doing.
I find things i enjoy doing and if i enjoy doing it, then that is seen by my audience and they enjoy the trick as well.
You are just going to have to go through trial and error until you find things you like that have a good impact on your audience.
Took me 6 years to find the style i love and i continue to find the tricks that work best for me.

good answer...
the truth is that, all the kids on here are gonna start naming names of tricks that work for them (or that they think work for them)....but they arent you, and they know nothing about you.
i personally hate topics like this....they're a waste.....
if you want to do good magic that gets strong reactions...then do material that you like, that is at your skill level....and enjoy yourself.
there is no better advice than that.

yeah i agree with prof, u can get good reactions with a good performance of any effect. its all in ur speech, style, and patter, if it all comes together well enough, then u will always get good reactions.
You guys are no help. I wanted to practice a magic trick and get good at it, so I just wanted some tricks that are good. I already know about that 'style' stuff. ok?

fine, then you can start by helping us....what do you do now...what is your skill level...
i do card routines that have more than 25 sleights in a 3 minute routine....is that what you want, or do you need simple stuff....
if your trying to be a mentalist then sponge bunnies isnt for you....but it is a strong effect.
you have to help us out and give us some guidelines....
what tricks are you good at now?

Then if you already know what your style is, then you should be able to find tricks you want.
You would also know that you cant ask people what tricks will be good for you, since non of us know you.
I can give you a bunch of suggestions that work for me but they will not work for you, because we have a different style, do you understand now why we cant help you?
If you really want me to suggest something that you can work on then go buy An Evening with Jack, the seattle sessions.

I want to know which of your routines get the best reactions. Quit heckling me with that 'style' stuff. That doesn't matter. And don't tell me that it does matter, because I already know that.
Example:
ambitious card routine
scotch and soda
e.t.c.

So that I can get two or three great tricks and practice them so I can find my style. I want a few good tricks that I can preform well. 3 good trick is better than 10,000 poorly preformed ones.
Oh yeah, and just because you think it's good, doesn't mean the average public does, out judgment is different then there's, because they are laymen.

WHAT!!!!!!
you ask for my opinion...and then question my judgement?
and just so you know, I have been a working restaurant magician for 20 years....so I think of every effect based on how it plays for laypeople...who cares what magicians think, they aren't the ones paying me!
the card effects that get the best reactions for me are effects that i worked years to perfect....
and i'm guessing that you don't have the sleight of hand skill to perform them...most are rather complex...
what kind of magic do you perform now...so maybe i can suggest something good, that is at your skill level.

It sounds like you are new to magic. so i suggest you get Michael Ammars easy to master card miracles dvd, which there is 9 of those and the card colleges books.

i dont see where this is going
i mean ok u want tricks, but wtf, there r just so many good tricks out there, and we dont kno what u like (vanishes, cards, mentalism, coins, etc. etc.) and we dont kno how long uve been doing magic and what point ure at.
u cant possibly ask for a "good trick" because theres no such thing.
a good trick is based on how its done, even if u dnot like coin magic, and someone performs a perfect 3 fly for u, doesnt mean its not a good trick. so i really dont kno how to answer u.

There's enough red flags in this thread that I should be dissuaded from helping, but I'll be nice and ignore them...
Asking for "Routines that work" is akin to asking for "Morality that's right". You're gonna be asking a hell of an open ended question. You might get some answers, but the wiser ones will tell you that it can never be clear cut as that.
Regarding magic, here's an example: Magick likes Copper Silver Brass, and most likely, Professor808 does not as it's too 'simple'. But Magick will tell you that it works very well for him. Does that mean Professor808 is wrong?
Personally, I like Stigmata, and I'm sure Magick and Professor808 are laughing at me for liking it. But of the many tricks I've done, Stigmata has provided me with GREAT reactions for something so annoyingly simple, so no matter how derisive magicians may get, I'm sticking with it.
Your own personality and style really has a lot to do with how tricks can impact people. I can make blood come out of my eyes and pull strings thru my neck, but nobody will take me seriously despite them being very hard hitting tricks (due to their visceral nature)
As you can see, it's a pretty difficult mess when talking about tricks alone... what more full Routines, as you've asked for. If you don't know the difference, then I'm sorry but you have a lot to learn.
So really, listen to the voice of the wise professionals who've given you advice in the earlier posts... they got it right.

Try getting Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. For only $20 it is well worth it. There are tons of tricks in there of all different kinds. The book is really great for all types of performers like close up, stage, table hopping, and a lot more. It is a very good place to start.

Hmm... Can try angle zero...
Angle Zero is not a routine..lol
I suggest you go from a trick where you mess around wiht their card.. not siged.. like making it change color and move from the middle to the top of the deck.. then have it signed, and go for a card to mouth followed by a card to pocket routine. And i highly recommend doing this for a crowd.. with one person, this is just lame..
and the best trick i've done that has gotten me the greatest reactions ever, is this psychological deck change except ofr their card trick.. it KILLS!!!! tha bomb in other words:)

only thing i can say is just look at effects that appeal to you, some of us like cards and coins (not a huge fan), i like illusions and comedy... find a category you like and go to youtube and look at tricks find something you like, work at it, if it doesnt work move on to something else...we cant suggest tricks cause we dont know you in person, but if you want simple then try a coin funnel (as long as you can classic palm a coin), if you are going to SAM convention and looking for a routine, look at older tricks as if you perform this ellusionist crap (except stigmate :]) they will say next...
it may not be what you want to hear, but some of the advice that is given is the best i have seen, we should call magick dumbledore or the master cause he is the most wise and has probably the most experience out of any of us. working restaurant magic for twenty years is un believable... if you have seen this guy perform its insane... best advice i can give you is make yourself known for something that is simple yet has a spin.
some examples
Mac King - Cloak of invisibility
Mike caveny - Card on Bow and Arrow/ Cuttlery appearance
Michael Finney - 6 card repeat (by far my favourite)
im working on a routine which uses a simple device yet is so simple to perform and i wont say what it is yet, but i will post a video of it soon.. if you are dying to know message me (i would like your feedback on the idea magick) something is cut restored then floats and dances and its not a rope!

zero u seem to be new to this so im not going to be rude to you like u were to everyone else we cant give u a routine because it isnt your style ur style is how u are what u want to do the effects u like doing then u need to routine them yourself and make the tricks you love work for you i could give u my routines but i WONT because of 2 reasons
1. i dont want you to just copy my routine
2. it isnt your style only you can choose what effects u can and will do

I hate hate threads like this.
I 100% agree with everything Magick and the Prof have said.
It just pisses me off when people say "What tricks get good reactions?" or when a trick is advertised as getting "killer reactions". Does it? Good for you...
Why ask what gets good reactions? Look at the trick and decide for yourself whether or not it fits your style and whether or not you would get the appropriate reactions with it.
Us magicians don't have a stock library of tricks that are awesome and that can work for anyone.
What the hell kind of an answer were you hoping for? A list of random tricks? Cos I can give you one if you like...
And don't be so ungrateful of advice offered by superiors, you little prick.
Now what do you actually want us to tell you?
lol.. a simple ACR can get the most amazing reactions.. it's just all about how you do it and present it:)

That's just the thing, if I pick something appealing to me, then that doesn't necessarily mean that the audience will think it's good.
I have practiced my Biddle trick for over half a year. It's one of my favorite tricks, and I still think it's awesome, but still some pinheads just don't think it's cool, no matter how I present it. Not everyone's the same, so not everyone will think the same trick is awesome. I want to find a trick that is well rounded and can bend to make it seem cool to a wider spectrum of people.
Also, I've been doing Jay Noblezada's $2 window for almost the same amount of time. I think it's one of the most amazing tricks in the world, and yet I've only had three people that think it's even remotely cool.
None of this has anything to do with bad presentation or poor practice time. I already know to practice before performance on real people and with a mirror.

Well the problem is that Zero says he's been doing just that but it's just not working well enough for him. Therefore, we're trying to find the root of the problem. I don't think people were unnecessarily harsh, as Zero's responses were really insulting at one point. If anything, you're just saying what everyone has been saying all along, actually. It doesn't make sense to "not give a crap about what other magicians think" because thinking you can improve your craft alone, without critique, is flawed thinking. It's learning how to climb a mountain. You might be able to learn how to do it on your own or by watching other people do it, but to disregard what experienced people tell you is just plain silly.

i agree, i do biddle most of the time when i meet someone new, i get crazy ass reactions with it tho. when i do magic, i like to have the spectators totally concentrated, and i like to joke around and improvise when performing. its my style of performing, and its what i believe works best for me, because to be honest, if i tried to perform like david blaine, and take this magic stuff terribly seriously, i cant really do it (however i do try to pitch things down to a serious lvl when i perform with the tarantula).
if they dont like ur trick, then i really think it IS ur problem. altho i kno some of u may not think biddle is such a good trick, but work with me here >.>

i have literlay stood there infront of over 80 people and say "Hey watch me" and shoved two feet of steel down my throat, if they're eyes werent on me, they were shut cuz it was too much for them. Its the look on there face.
I crave all the things i mentioned so much that i'll risk dieing to get it.
What i do is not for you, but you crave attention. so get it by just fucking with people, dont always have to amaze or freak out...
But all in all, do what makes you happy.[/QUOTE]
(about the rude) Hey, at least I don't swear, and he [I]was[I] being a meat head.
For some reason, those sentences made me smile, because I'm almost the same way. I think almost the same way, only i don't want to make a fool of myself by eating metal. =D
I love messing with people, only I need a direct definition of what a style is. Apparently, it's a mix of the type of tricks you preform, how you present it and choice of tricks. Am I right?

precisely. all style is is just how u present urself to others. there may be a tendency to act differently while practicing and while actually performing to a live audience (shyness may break in).
for a real definition of style:
- manner: how something is done or how it happens; "her dignified manner"; "his rapid manner of talking"; "their nomadic mode of existence"; "in the ...
- expressive style: a way of expressing something (in language or art or music etc.) that is characteristic of a particular person or group of people or period
