I think i know how its done without gimmicks and impromtu:

when you selaed the envelope you will get the ring to go to the spot of the hole
so when you put the string through it goes thru the ring to.
and then just make a knot

now let the ring fall back again by the great mighty gravity

let the spectators feel the ring on the bottom of the envelope while you are hiding the hole (beacause you can c the string is in the envelope)

now just pull it rlly hard :P

even though the shape is there it can still move around
