Identity Tutorial
Gimmicks: The only gimmick you will need is a double backer (double backed card). Start by drawing random marks on 1 side of the card. Make some straight and some bent so it looks like they could be arranged into words. Use the same type of marker you will perform with, so their name looks like the scribbles re-arranged. That is the one time set up you will need. Place the gimmick marks up second from the top of the deck (one card above it.
Getting the name: To get their name, just ask for it. Walk up and introduce yourself and say I’m _____________ what’s your name? Then don’t refer to them as that for the rest of the trick, make it casual and they’ll forget about it.
The basic trick: spread the deck and tell the spectator to take any card, be sure not to flash the gimmick (which should still be second to the top). Once they pick a card, tell them to draw a picture on. If you say sign their name, that will put their name back into play, which you don’t want. Once they have drawn the picture on the front of the card, tell them to place the card on top of the deck. Do any false cuts you want to convince them their card is lost in the middle of the deck.
Depth Illusion: Your set up should now be (from the top) Signed card, indifferent card, gimmick. Use the depth illusion to get rid of the indifferent card. Catch a break under the top card, and lever the back of the card up, leaving the front down. This is undetectable by the audience. Say something along the lines of “I could just reach into the deck and find a card and that would be your card (while doing it with the second card) but that would be know fun.” then place the indifferent card in the middle of the deck. Because of the tilt in the top card, they think the indifferent card was from the middle of the deck.
Writing the name: Now say that you will write random scribbles on the back of a random card, this is their card. When you say this, write their name, after you are done, use your middle finger to subtly replicate drawing more marks on the back of the card. In reality, it’s just your middle finger scratching the card. This should all be done with the deck tilted towards you so they can’t see. Second deal the gimmick onto the table, but don’t let them turn it over. Casually take 3 cards off the bottom of the deck and place them on the top over the card with their name on it. Then place the scribble card on top.
Jumping Marks: Your set up should be gimmick 3 indifferent cards, and the name card. Double lift the first 2 cards so it looks like the scribbles are on that card. When sowing the face of the indifferent card, drop the gimmick how it is on top of the deck. This allows you to show the face clean (The gimmick is un-scribble side up on top of the deck) then re-double lift the gimmick to show the scribble back. You can show the scribbles don’t rub off, then, still keeping the double lift, quickly swipe the top card (gimmick) onto the next indifferent card with your thumb. Sow the first indifferent card clean backed. Repeat this process so the setup is gimmick, indifferent, name card.
Disappearance and 1st Revelation: Here is how you rub the marks into the center of the deck. Push the 1st (gimmicked) card up with your fingers (black= gimmick/red=indifferent/yellow=Name)

Now with your palm pull the indifferent card back and out

Push the indifferent card over

Practice until you do this fluently and it will look like the marks vanish into the center of the deck. Cut the deck and say look your card could be anywhere in here. Search through the cards 1 by 1 until you come to the marks. This avoids flashing their name. Double lift to show their card has marks on it. It really has their name on it though. Tilt the deck towards you and drop off the signed card on top of the deck (secretly) and then place the gimmick on top.
Name change: Pick up the 2 cards in double lift. Shake the cards and do the twirl change. If you can’t look it up and find it, mail me back. Drop the cards back on top off the deck. Show their name is really on their signed card. When you drop the gimmick on top, it exposes the un-marked side, allowing you to show the whole deck clean “proving” the permanent ink really rearranged itself into their name (which you “didn’t know“). Then you can hand it out as the ultimate souvenir.
