When you hear of shimmed materials it means foil or wires were added to it. The main purpose of shimmed objects in magic is to make them respond to a magnet. EXP. a shimmed match may have a small wire inside of it which allows it to be attracted by a magnet (because the wire is metal). There are different ways magic company's shim objects but those are the most common ways.

lol, take a paperclip and bend it then cut off about an inch, stick it in, or for smaller things, cut off smaller lengths

When they manufacture shimmed cards I beleive they put a peice of foil inbetween the middle layer and the back layer.

Yes some foil is. I don't beleive alluminum foil is magnetic (the stuff you wrap your food with). I don't know much about the industry in making shimemd obejcts but I would assume they use a special type of foil (no idea what it is, just find one thats magnetic.). Upon further search ellusionist states in their M5 sale that (with one of their deals) shim foil is included to make your own shimmed cards etc. Heres the passage from the page.

"Shimming Supplies: Additional shim foil and wire for making your own shimmed playing cards, business cards, envelopes, etc. Simply glue two surfaces together with shim material between them and you will have a shimmed item that can be detected or affected by a magnet."
